Lymphocyte chromosome aberrations in Thorotrast patients (part 1 of 3)

     Thorotrast is a colloidal suspension of radioactive thorium dioxide (232ThO2), first introduced as a new X-ray contrast medium (e.g., hepatolienography) in 1982 (Oka, M; Bluhbaum, T.), soon after it was commercialized as an X-ray contrast medium for angiography, and thence widely used throughout Europe, Japan and North America during the World War II until the warning for adverse health effects, such as hepatic cancers add leukemia. In Japan a total of 20-33 thousands persons have been estimated to have had injection, mostly in the military and navy hospitals and approximately 5000 of them were assumed to have survived as of 1973 (Mori, T., Emviron. Res., 18:44-54, 1979). Among those, 255 persons could be followed up. Chromosomes were studied in peripheral blood lymphocytes in 77 patients.
